Draw rectangles, ellipses and lines

Pick the rectangle (5), ellipse (6) or line (7), then press and drag on the screen. The shape follows your pointer until you let go.

Draw a shape

1. Pick the tool on the toolbar or press its key.
2. Press where the shape should start.
3. Drag to size it, then let go.

A very short drag counts as an accidental tap and leaves nothing behind.

Shapes use the current colour, weight and line style. See Colours, weights and line styles.

Hand drawn or smooth

By default, shapes are drawn with a slight hand-drawn wobble, different every time. You can switch to clean geometry instead:

1. Click the pen in the menu bar and choose Preferences…
2. Go to Drawing.
3. Set Style to Hand drawn or Smooth.

The change applies to the whole drawing at once, including what’s already on screen.

The pen, the highlighter and the freehand arrow’s shaft are already smooth ink, so the setting leaves them alone. A hand-drawn shape keeps the same wobble when the screen redraws, so it doesn’t shimmer.
